Support our community when they need it most

For many, Hunger Action Month is a time to consider getting involved in support organizations like Sierra Community House who help our neighbors experiencing food insecurity. As Development Director at Sierra Community House, I’m asked a lot “What can I do to help?”—my favorite question to answer! We love working with schools, churches, businesses, and anyone who wants to help us amplify our mission to better serve our community.
Here are a few ways you can make a positive impact:
1. Learn
We live in an idyllic setting where it is hard to imagine people dealing with issues like food insecurity—but it exists. Last year alone, Sierra Community House provided over 293,000 meals to the North Tahoe/Truckee region.
2. Act
Get involved! Sign up to volunteer at one of our food distributions or to deliver weekly meals. Our work is not possible without our amazing volunteers who give their time to our programs.
3. Food donations
With the holidays around the corner, many organizations and schools are asking to put together food drives. While this is so generous, the increased amount of food donations can create logistical challenges to our capacity. In order to work together more effectively to serve our community, please consider creative options during food drive season, like a virtual food drive! While we can help you arrange a traditional food drive, Virtual Food Drives are ideal. The food banks have incredible buying power and may be able to do substantially more with your dollar than you. Sierra Community House can provide an entire meal for $2.08! That is substantially less than the cost of purchasing a single item at the grocery store! 4. Give
As you consider your year-end giving, please think of Sierra Community House. Our Hunger Relief program is a critical piece of our mission—and happens to be our most un-funded program. Fundraisers like our Chocolate and Wine Festival and generous donations from foundations and community members make it possible for us to provide healthy meals to people when they need it the most.
