September is World Hunger Action Month, a time to reflect on the global crisis of hunger and its impact in our community. Hunger is more pervasive than many realize, even in small communities like ours. Our hunger relief program is one of the few in the area that works daily to diminish food insecurity and empower our community through a variety of services. So far this year, Sierra Community House has served over 150,000 meals.

Empowering Through Choice and Support

Our hunger relief program offers more than just food; it restores dignity and empowers individuals. The Park and Shop distribution in Truckee is one example of this. Each Tuesday, the warehouse transforms into a grocery store style layout, offering a wide selection of fruits, vegetables, and nonperishable items. This distribution allows individuals to walk the floor, select their items, and then check out; creating a sustainable and empowering experience. One community member shared, “When I first walked into the pantry, I was overwhelmed with gratitude. The support I received went beyond food—it was about rebuilding my life.”

Evolution of Our Resources

5 years ago, Family Resource Center of Truckee, North Tahoe Family Resource Center, Tahoe SAFE Alliance, and Project MANA — united to form Sierra Community House. This merging simplified things for community members that were going to each organization for services. Now community members can go to a food distribution and get not only nutritious food, but also the resources they need in other areas, whether legal or rental assistance.

Get Involved

This World Hunger Action Month, join us in the fight against hunger. Whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word, your action will make a difference. Sierra Community House can provide a meal for approximately $2.38. The 238 Plate Club is a recurring monthly donation that allows our Hunger Relief Program to plan and effectively purchase food from our partners.

Our efforts would not be possible without our recurring donations and partnerships with local organizations. We are grateful to partner with Tahoe food Hub, Safeway Tahoe city, Safeway Truckee, Save Mart Truckee, Grocery Outlet Truckee and Incline, Raleys Truckee, New moon, West Shore Market, Tahoe Haus bakery, Truckee Sour Dough, Truckee Farmers Market, Tahoe Abilities, Truckee Optimist Club, and TTUSD.

This month we will be hosting a Meet and Greet/Warehouse Tour with Paul Bancroft, Executive Director and Patrick Kratzer, Director of Hunger Relief Operations! See below for event details.
