For years, Michelle Reynolds, who resides in Truckee, lived under the constant threat of physical violence from her husband. When she made the decision to leave him, the threat only grew. “He became more controlling as he recognized and had a fear of me leaving. The clamp started getting tighter and tighter,” she said. Reynolds bravely spoke to Moonshine Ink in early October to share her experience.
Raising awareness: confronting domestic violence in October and beyond

Organizations like Sierra Community House are leading the charge in domestic violence education. They recognize that prevention starts early; their programs begin teaching children about boundaries and emotional regulation as early as kindergarten. Through engaging activities, such as using a yellow dinosaur to illustrate body autonomy with the phrase “my body is mine, mine, mine,” they empower young students to understand personal space and respect.

September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide effort to raise awareness about hunger in America. As Sierra Community House’s director of hunger relief operations, I often receive surprised reactions when talking about my work to people from outside of our area, like, “I never would think there is food insecurity in a place as nice as Lake Tahoe.”

This year, due to massive national cuts to Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) funding levels, Sierra Community House will experience a $440,000 decrease in funding, jeopardizing the very programs that help victims heal and rebuild their lives. This cut will impact our ability to serve victims of domestic and sexual violence and operate our safe house, and will affect staffing.
