In addition to April being Sexual Assault Awareness Month, it is also Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month. This provides an opportunity for communities nationwide to come together and take action to support strong families, thriving children, and healthier communities. “This year, we unite under the theme “POWERED BY HOPE, STRENGTHENED BY PREVENTION”, recognizing that when families have the right support, they can build a brighter future for their children.” – Prevent Child Abuse America.
Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, Sierra Community House works year-round to spread awareness and prevent child abuse before it ever happens. In particular, through various workshops and our collaboration with Peer Support Specialist, Beatriz Schaffert, we offer children an opportunity to grow up feeling safe, valued, and loved. Additionally, we provide their caregivers with support groups intended to create stronger families and build bright futures for children in our community. Read below to learn more about Beatriz and the positive impact we are making together.
How does your role/organization collaborate with Sierra Community House, and why is this partnership crucial in addressing child abuse crimes?
Over the years, collaboration with Sierra Community House has looked different, but our continued practice has remained the same; support the prevention of abuse and neglect in children in our Tahoe Truckee community. Some examples of this collaboration include: continued collaboration with the Tahoe Truckee Child Abuse Prevention Council, community education, parenting classes, support to families one-on-one, Co-Parenting support, and capacity training opportunities to both communities at broad and community partners. Our work together is in hopes to foster a loving and caring community where children and families can thrive.
Can you describe your role as a Peer Support Specialist?
The role as a peer support specialist allows for one-on-one work with members of our community. With this opportunity, peer support services meet people where they are and support them with what they identify as their needs. At times, this can be acknowledged and heard, and at other times it can provide life skills. Oftentimes, we are lacking support, and peer support services give us the honor of being the ones to provide it.
What kind of guidance do you offer to parents and families through our co-parenting sessions and parent support groups?
For parents navigating co-parenting, my guidance is to allow kids to love both parents, which means not putting the kids in the middle. Some examples include: don’t talk badly about the other parent, don’t argue in front of the kids, don’t ask them to spy when the children are spending time at the other parent’s home, the list goes on. Do give them the opportunity to love both of you. For Parent Support Groups, I am a parent of two beautiful teens and let me tell you something, parenting can be hard. You don’t have to do this alone. Support Groups offer the space to vent, cry if you need to, or talk about new skills. Support can make all the difference.
How can people recognize signs and prevent children from experiencing abuse?
I could write a whole 5-page paper on this, but I don’t want to bore you. If it doesn’t look, sound or feel right, that’s your sign. I invite you to be curious, care and act. Be The One who makes the difference.
How You Can Help:
There are several ways you can make a difference in your community and support efforts to prevent child abuse:
- Learn the Signs of Abuse and Neglect: Recognizing the signs of abuse is the first step in protecting children. These may include unexplained injuries, fearfulness, or withdrawal from social interactions. Educating yourself about these signs helps you act quickly if you notice something concerning.
- Speak Up: If you suspect abuse, it’s essential to speak up. Reporting your concerns can help protect children and prevent further harm. If you’re unsure how to proceed, there are resources and experts ready to help guide you.
- Support Local Organizations: Your support of organizations like Sierra Community House helps provide the necessary services and resources for children and families in need. Whether it’s through donations, volunteer work, or spreading awareness, every action counts.
