At Sierra Community House, we’re deeply grateful for every person who wants to help fight hunger in our community. Many people wonder: Is it better to donate food or money? While both come from a generous place, financial donations often go even further — helping us make your support count in the biggest possible way.

When you donate money, you help us stretch every dollar. Because we purchase food in bulk from Food Banks and local grocery partners, we can buy up to four times more food than the average shopper. Your $1 becomes multiple meals for local families.

Financial gifts also allow us to buy food when it’s needed most, reducing waste and ensuring families receive fresh, high-quality items. We can factor in our current inventory, storage capacity, and local demand — so nothing goes unused and every item meets a need.

Just as importantly, cash donations save time and resources. Sorting and organizing individual food donations can be labor intensive for small teams. When you give money, you free up staff and volunteers to focus on what matters most: connecting families with healthy food and compassionate support.

Every can, dollar, and act of generosity makes a difference. But if you’re looking to make your impact go further, a monetary gift helps us feed more neighbors, more efficiently — and with the dignity and care they deserve.
