I remember it like it was yesterday. In 2008, I sat in an interview for the Prevention Educator position at Tahoe Women’s Services. I was asked whether I could commit to one year in the role. A year felt like an eternity at the time—but of course I said yes. I needed the job.
Eighteen years later, I find myself writing to share that I am stepping down from my role as Executive Director.
Serving the region where I grew up has been one of the greatest honors of my life. What began nearly two decades ago as an opportunity to contribute to something meaningful evolved into a journey filled with purpose, learning, and deep connection. Throughout these years, I have witnessed firsthand the strength, resilience, and generosity that define the communities we serve—experiences that have shaped me both personally and professionally.
There have been countless memorable moments: participating in the unveiling of our name change from Tahoe Women’s Services to Tahoe SAFE Alliance; the merger that ultimately created Sierra Community House; allocating a portion of our Year-End Appeal funds to victims of the Paradise Fire; and even throwing out the first pitch at a Reno Aces game during a staff celebration.
But the moments that impacted me most were the ones I witnessed every day—the extraordinary work our staff do for the community. This is the most caring, committed, and compassionate team I have ever been a part of. They show up again and again for people during some of the lowest and most frightening moments of their lives. They create connection, foster healing, and build community. Leaving this team is unquestionably the hardest part.
To our extraordinary staff: thank you for your dedication, creativity, and the humanity you bring to your work. I have always said this is “heart work,” and you embody that every single day. You are pillars of this community.
To our board members, past and present: your leadership, stewardship, and vision have allowed Sierra Community House to grow and evolve to meet the changing needs of our region. Thank you for your trust and guidance.
To our volunteers: you are the lifeblood of this organization. Your passion and generosity show what is possible when people come together to care for one another. Subi power!
To our donors and supporters: your belief in this mission has allowed us to expand our reach and deepen our impact. Because of you, families have found stability, individuals have received critical support, and our community is stronger.
Over these 18 years, I have witnessed countless reminders of why this work matters—neighbors helping neighbors, families finding hope in the most difficult moments, and a community stepping forward with compassion when it is needed most. These memories will stay with me always.
While it is never easy to say goodbye to a place and people who have meant so much to me, I leave with immense pride in all we have accomplished together and full confidence in Sierra Community House’s future. The foundation built by our staff, board, volunteers, and supporters is strong, and I know the organization will continue to thrive.
I am grateful that Teresa Crimmens, our Deputy Executive Director, will step into the role of Executive Director on March 30. She is smart, steady, principled, and deeply committed to this organization. Having spent more than a decade helping build what we have today, she is exceptionally well prepared to lead us forward.
As for my next chapter, I am honored to be stepping into the role of Director of Neighborhood Services and Sustainability for the Town of Truckee. I will carry with me the lessons, relationships, and experiences from my years at Sierra Community House as I continue serving our community in a new way.
Thank you for the trust, partnership, and friendship you have shared with me. It has truly been the privilege of a lifetime.
Sierra Community House will always hold a special place in my heart.
With deep gratitude,
Paul
