May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to shining a light on the importance of mental well-being and breaking down the barriers that prevent individuals from seeking help. At Sierra Community House, this mission is at the core of our work.

We recently had the opportunity to connect with Victim Support Advocate Ludim, a dedicated professional who works with victims of domestic abuse and violence, to discuss her strategies on improving mental health in the workplace as well as for survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault.

What are simple ways one can maintain mental health?

The importance of daily self-care habits makes all the difference when maintaining mental health. Habits such as proper nutrition, sufficient sleep, setting boundaries, digesting emotions, and being in supportive communities, all contribute to healthy mental well-being. In the workplace, it’s crucial to set priorities, take breaks, and foster a positive work environment. Additionally, therapy can be essential to learn coping skills.

How does Sierra Community House prioritize Mental Health?

Our priority at Sierra Community House is to empower individuals to find the help they need, ensuring their safety, addressing basic needs, and guiding them through evaluation and support. From accessing medical assistance to offering peer support and connecting with therapists, our goal is to assist each person in finding their own balance and improving their mental and physical health. Recognizing that mental health is interconnected with physical well-being, Sierra Community House also offers a weekly community style pantry and emphasizes the importance of listening to one’s mind and body.

How can individuals and communities raise awareness about mental health issues during this month?

During Mental Health Awareness Month and throughout the year, individuals and communities can raise awareness by building support networks to combat isolation and foster a sense of community. Family members and friends play a crucial role in supporting loved ones struggling with mental health issues and can offer empathy, understanding, and encouragement.

At Sierra Community House, our commitment to building thriving communities remains steadfast, grounded in the belief that every individual deserves access to the resources and support necessary for their mental well-being. As a reminder, we have a 24-hour helpline that can be reached at (800) 736-1060.
