This month, we are filled with gratitude as we celebrate Rocio’s 10-year anniversary as a Promotora with Sierra Community House. Over the past decade, she has walked alongside neighbors in their hardest moments, connecting them with resources, hope, and encouragement. What began as her own journey of healing has grown into a legacy of compassion and empowerment for countless families. We are so thankful for Rocio’s dedication and heart in building a stronger, healthier community.
- What motivated you to join the organization 10 years ago? In 2010 my family and I went through a very difficult situation, and I was in a depression. I didn’t know that Sierra Community House existed, even though it was 2 blocks from my home. Someone suggested I take therapy there, and I spent 3 years receiving the service, I spent 2 years of volunteering in the hunger relief program, and I asked GOD to give me the opportunity to give back some of how much they had helped me. Now, here I am 10 years later helping my community, and I hope there will be many more years ahead.
- What has been your proudest moment during your time working here? Empowering my community so that they can receive the service they need is my greatest pride. It fills me with a lot of joy and above all tranquility when community members come up to me and say thank you for helping to connect me to the service that I needed.
- How do you stay motivated and focused on the mission when times a difficult? Putting myself in the other person’s shoes, sometimes they need something so simple that they just need to be heard.
- What is one goal you’re still eager to achieve in your career? I want to reach even more community members, so they know what resources are available to them. But, above all, I want to focus on the workshops we offer that empower people. Knowledge gives you power. And that creates healthy communities.
- What are your expectations for sierra community house? That the organization continues to grow and thus be able to reach more members of the community.
- What’s your favorite way to relax after a busy day of work? Lie on the floor and lift my feet up with relaxing music and a unifier of Lavender essence.
- What is a memorable or funny moment that you have experienced in sierra community house? Every day is fun. I have some colleagues who do make my days short and fun.
Thank you to Sierra Community House for being my second home and supporting me in the most difficult moments of my life. Thank you!
