April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a time to recognize survivors, deepen our understanding of sexual violence, and reflect on how we as a community can do better. At Sierra Community House, SAAM is not just a calendar moment. It is an opportunity to have real, meaningful conversations about prevention, healing, and what it looks like to truly support one another.
This April, we are inviting our community to gather around a powerful story.
About the Film
Women Talking, directed by Sarah Polley and based on Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name, follows a group of women in an isolated Mennonite religious colony who have been systematically assaulted by the men in their community. Faced with an impossible choice, do nothing, stay and fight, or leave, they gather in secret over two days to decide their future together. The film won the 2023 Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, and it is exactly the kind of story this month calls us toward: one about survival, moral courage, and the power of collective voice.
