We sat down with Maria as she shared her past twenty years of selfless service and empowerment.
What originally attracted you to Sierra Community House, and how has your role and the organization evolved over the years?
When I first started as a volunteer, there were no bilingual staff. Even though my English wasn’t perfect, it was an opportunity that caught my eye. I started working with a small team in Kings Beach, CA. We sat closely together, shared one telephone, and held weekly events for the community like Mi Bebe y Yo.
In the past two decades, I’ve seen Sierra Community House slowly grow and evolve, embracing change and innovation to expand its reach and impact. Each year, we’ve enhanced our capacity to serve and uplift those in need.
Can you share a memorable experience or accomplishment from your time here?
What stands out to me are the countless small moments. Teaching someone to fill out a check, helping a mother find childcare, or assisting with a first budget all embody our mission. Each interaction, like explaining a utility bill or finding food resources, makes a significant impact. These small steps empower individuals and create positive change, making my time here deeply fulfilling.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career at this organization?
If you’re just starting your career, remember to embrace patience and approach each person with genuine respect. Everyone’s journey is unique, and your ability to listen, understand, and guide with empathy will make all the difference.
