April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Sierra Community House was proud to join organizations, survivors, and allies from across the state for a powerful day of advocacy at the Nevada State Capitol in Carson City.
Together with the Nevada Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence and many others, we gathered to raise our voices, share our stories, and call for a stronger, more compassionate response to sexual violence. It was an inspiring reminder that when we stand together, change is not only possible — it’s inevitable.
April 30th marked Denim Day, a symbolic close to Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Denim Day serves as a reminder that what someone wears is never an invitation. Participants wore jeans in solidarity with survivors everywhere, challenging harmful myths and standing firm in our commitment to end victim-blaming culture.
“I’m so grateful to the Nevada Coalition for organizing this event,” said Community Education and Prevention Manager Dom Apollon. “The state legislature only meets for 120 consecutive days every other year, so it’s a small window to be able to sit in legislators’ offices to tell stories about how coerced debt from abusers serves as a not uncommon barrier to survivors who are seeking safety and stability in their lives.”
“It was also great to connect or re-connect just outside the Capitol with violence prevention colleagues who work in other parts of the Lake Tahoe and greater Reno region,” added Apollon. “I’m comparatively new to this work, so having an opportunity to meet face-to-face with my more experienced peers is invaluable and uplifting.”
We are so grateful to everyone who brought their signs, their voices, and their hearts to the Capitol with us. Together, we are making a difference — one conversation, one policy change, one act of solidarity at a time.
