At Sierra Community House, we’re proud to support a vibrant Promotora program that helps bridge the gap in access to healthcare, education, and essential resources in North Tahoe and Truckee. Our Promotoras, also known as Community Health Workers, offer culturally rooted education, workshops and parent support groups. They not only connect and advocate for the overall well-being of our community but are a vital link between families and the support they need.

As we look to the future, we’re excited to expand our Promotora group and our impact in the community. For the first time, we’ve welcomed a male Promotor to our team. Ricardo Oropeza brings motivation, mentorship, and a model of healthy masculinity to his work.

Read on to hear directly from Ricardo about his passions, goals, and vision for this new role.

What is your position at Sierra Community House and can you describe what you do in your role?

I am currently a proud promoter, and my role primarily involves coordinating a group for Latino men called Consejo de Líderes (Council of Leaders). In this group, we focus on various topics such as Respect, Integrity, Responsibility, Communication, Vision, and Action.

What drew you to work at Sierra Community House?

My biggest motivation for working at Sierra Community House is knowing that I now have the opportunity to help my community in a new way. I strive to strengthen our connections, listen to their concerns and needs, and seek solutions through this organization. By earning their trust, we can truly become an ally in their daily lives.

How long have you lived in Tahoe? What does “community” mean to you?

I have been blessed to live in this community for about eight years. From the moment I arrived, this beautiful place has not only been a wonderful community but also a big family—one that I am incredibly proud to be part of.

Tell us about what you like to do for fun! And/or: what is your favorite part about living in the mountains/near the lake?

My greatest joy is spending time with my family—whether it’s hiking, biking, skiing, or anything else, as long as we are together. That’s what truly brings me happiness in this environment, which always offers something to do and enjoy.

How do you prioritize self-care?

Self-care is a priority in every moment and every decision I make. I focus on maintaining a healthy diet and exercising as much as possible. I firmly believe in the saying, “We must take care of our bodies while we are young so they will take care of us when we are older.”

What are you the most hopeful about when you think about the work Sierra Community House does in the community?

What inspires me the most is witnessing the incredible benefits that, through great effort, our Sierra Community House team provides to the community. Whether it’s offering services, resources, guidance, or support, our goal is to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.
