This May, the Sierra Community House welcomed Sophia Guglin to the Board of Directors. Board members bring fresh insight to the organization and play a key role in our events, direction, and growth. Sophia’s unique insights, background, and commitment to working in our community will play a key role in strengthening the mission and reach of the Sierra Community House!
We sat down with Sophia to learn about her background and motivations. Here’s what she had to say:
Can you tell us a bit about your professional background and how it led you to this board position?
While my current career is in the restaurant industry, my degree is in Sociology and Law. In Washington, DC, I worked in correctional re-entry helping incarcerated folks reacclimatize back into the community. I also was a volunteer in my local DVSV shelter working in the safe house and answering the emergency hotline. I am passionate about working in my community and have appreciated Alibi Ale Works as a platform to work with all different community organizations now that I am in Tahoe. Joining the board at SCH is an intimidating but welcome challenge as my next step in volunteering within my community.
Who or what inspires you in your professional and personal life?
I am most inspired by the friends I have made throughout my life whose perseverance through unimaginable strife drives me to this work. After sitting alongside my best friend through months of court cases to separate herself from her abuser, losing friends to gang violence, and hearing countless tales of hardship, I am proud to be part of the safety net to catch anyone in need.
In what ways do you plan to engage with the community as a board member?
I look forward to participating in many fundraising events as an advocate for our communities’ needs. I am also excited to be involved in the growth of SCH in the next few years to better serve a larger population.
Can you share a story or example of how you’ve seen Sierra Community House make a difference?
It has been so wonderful to host Sierra Community House at Alibi for different events. It is inspiring to see how many people turn out for each fundraiser we host. This is one of many testaments to the impact SCH has on our community. Every event we get to hear new stories from those directly impacted by the work SCH does every day.
In closing, we warmly welcome Sophia Guglin and look forward to the positive impact she will make within Sierra Community House and the North Lake Tahoe/Truckee community.
