Celebrating Growth: Family Room Graduates Its 2025–26 Class at Kings Beach and Truckee

This week, Sierra Community House marked a milestone worth celebrating: the graduation of the Family Room class of 2025–26, with ceremonies held at both our Kings Beach and Truckee locations. For the families involved, it was more than a send-off. It was a moment to look back at a full year of firsts: first friendships, first songs learned by heart, first moments of a toddler walking into a room and feeling at home.

This was also a landmark year for the program itself. For the first time, Family Room operated at two locations simultaneously — continuing its long run in Truckee while SCH took over the beloved program at Kings Beach Elementary, building on the foundation established by Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Together, the two sites served families across the region from October through late May, welcoming children ages zero to four and their parents and caregivers three days a week for free, bilingual, play-based learning.

The results speak for themselves,  not in test scores, but in the quieter evidence of growth that parents notice first.

Ainsley brought her two-year-old daughter Georgia to Family Room this past year, and watched her change. “Her socialization, vocabulary, and overall confidence have just gone through the roof,” Ainsley said. “We are so grateful for these community resources.” Georgia arrived as a toddler navigating the world on her own terms. She leaves with a year of songs, stories, friendships, and skills she’ll carry into preschool and beyond.

That kind of transformation is exactly what Family Room was built for. Through reading, music, crafts, and play, the program works to build school readiness and a genuine love of learning — while also giving parents a place to connect with one another, find support, and feel less alone in the work of raising young children. Sessions are offered in both English and Spanish, and the program’s inclusive, multicultural approach ensures every family feels reflected and welcomed.

Other parents have described the impact in their own words. One mother shared that her daughter’s experience with multicultural activities and an inclusive environment helped her learn to appreciate diversity in a meaningful way. Another described watching her son’s severe separation anxiety dissolve over just a few weeks, replaced by confidence and a willingness to jump in, share, and create.

Sierra Community House is grateful to the partners and funders who make Family Room possible: First 5 Placer County, First 5 Nevada County, Tahoe Truckee Unified School District, Truckee Optimist Club, Tahoe Truckee Community Foundation, Visión y Compromiso, and Lahontan Community Foundation. Their investment in early childhood and family support is what keeps these doors open.

To the graduating families of 2025–26: congratulations. The work you put in — showing up week after week, learning alongside your children, building community — matters. We’ll see you out there.
