Q: What is Crisis Intervention Training, and what is it designed to do?

A: The Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) is a 69-hour course that provides training as Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Counselor, preparing participants to support and assist victims and survivors in different capacities.

Q: Who is this training for? Do you need a professional background to participate?

A: This class is required for all staff and volunteers who want to work with community members receiving services from a Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Prevention and Crisis Intervention agency. No professional background is needed to participate.

Q: What topics does the training cover?

A: The syllabus, reviewed and approved by CalOES (California Office of Emergency Services), includes the basics of domestic violence and sexual assault, cultural diversity, substance abuse, legal issues of domestic violence and sexual abuse, acquaintance rape, child abuse, suicide and crisis intervention techniques.

Q: It’s 69 hours of training: that’s a real commitment. How is that time structured?

A: The CIT 2026 will be offered in person, with meetings three days a week, four hours each day, for six weeks. It will meet on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm., in Incline Village, NV.

Q: What does someone walk away with at the end?

A: Attendees receive a Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Counselor certificate of completion at the end.

Q: What does the certificate allow someone to do at Sierra Community House specifically?

A: It allows staff and volunteers to work in any of the following programs at Sierra Community House: Community Help Line, Children’s Program, Safehouse, Violence Prevention Education, Empowerment Groups, and Legal Advocacy.

Q: Why does Sierra Community House offer this training? How does it connect to your broader mission?

A: Is an integral part of Sierra Community House’s Mission to connect and empower our community through crisis intervention and victim support services to victims and survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, sexual harassment, child abuse, sex trafficking, stalking, and dating violence.  Offering the CIT is an important piece of this commitment and is included in the scope of work of our DV & SA grants supporting Sierra Community House’s work.

Q: Why is this kind of training especially important in a community like North Lake Tahoe and Truckee?

A: The limited offering of services and the barriers to access present on a rural area such as Tahoe-Truckee, make especially important the availability of these services and the support of the community to sustain their capacity and reach overtime. Support services that are critical to victims and survivors are often located outside the basin and require additional efforts to guarantee access.

Q: What should someone expect on their first day? Is it emotionally intense?

A: The contents and discussions can be heavy and intense, even triggering for some attendees, due to the nature of the topics presented. A very intentional set of self-care principles inform the entire course, prioritizing participants’ wellbeing and their decision to engage or not depending on their own personal decision.

Q: Is the training really free? Are there any costs or requirements participants should know about?

A: The training is completely for free and all materials and supplies are provided, as well as coffee, snacks and refreshments in each meeting.

Q: How do people register, and what should they do if they have questions before signing up?

A: To register or ask questions, contact Anibal Cordoba Sosa at acordoba@sierracommunityhouse.org or 530-414-7372.
